Four arrested for smuggling
26 March 2010

MBUZINI – Four suspects have been arrested over the past weekend for goods smuggling. According to Mbuzini police, the suspects were arrested after smuggling goods across the Mbuzini border line that separates South Africa and Mozambique.

One of the suspects was a Nigerian who was arrested in possession of goods ranging from clothes to cosmetics.

Last weekend the Mbuzini police also arrested 3 women and 1 man ran away. Police said that the suspect on the run is the driver of the truck that was used to load the items. It is also alleged that there might be more people involved in this type of smuggling, which will be determined by the future investigation that the police are taking.

According to Mbuzini police’s spokes person constable Selby Simelane the suspects are from different countries: South Africa, Mozambique and Nigeria. Simelane alleged that all of the suspects are getting accommodation from the villagers at Mbuzini. “We condemn giving accommodation to smugglers because it indicates that the community is also involved in the crime,” said Simelane. He also said that some of those arrested reside in Johannesburg where they own businesses.

Simelane warned the community that if goods are found his or her house the goods will be taken and it may lead to arrest.

Simelane said that they are also suspecting that drugs are smuggled to South Africa from the Mbuzini boarder line.

Simlenale envisaged that the Mbuzini police station’s station commissioner, Sup. Nkosi, has established a task team that will only be focusing on the border line. He said that they are strongly against the illegal crossings that are taking place in Mbuzini. “If people want to come to South Africa they must have passports because we won’t allow them to cross in illegal crossings as they use it for havens for smuggling,” warned Simelane.
