NELSPRUIT – The Mpumalanga lowveld chess union will, again, be represented in the SA championships which will be held in Bloemfontein in December this year. This was revealed last weekend when the union hosted its final selection games in Nelspruit. Participants from Nkomazi also attended the selection games. The Nkomazi Chess Club’s six selected members under the watchful eye of Christopher Masilela, who is the sports coordinator in youth in action (YiA), were in high spirits. They cannot wait to go to Bloemfontein in December after going through the most challenging phase of their chess lives. The games are said to have been very tough and demanded more brainpower. “It is not for the first time that these players will be representing us in the SA champs. Even last year we had five players representing us in Pretoria and I am very proud of this players and the rest of Nkomazi must support them because going to the SA champs will need more of their power and some of these kids are from very underprivileged homes. They are often hungry and cannot fully concentrate on their practice,” said Masilela.Masilela also urged local business people to call 013 7814 259 with financial support. “We are facing challenges with securing transport and catering for the kids and that can stop them from participating at the highest level,” he said.
