NELSPRUIT – Mpumalanga MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Creation, Jabu Mahlangu, believes that preparations for the 2010 Soccer World Cup are up to standard and on track.
He stressed in his Policy and Budget speech that this province is on track and ahead of schedules as per FIFA requirements.

He said that his department has already set aside money for the preparations of this global showpiece and is working with other stakeholders to ensure that all programmes related to the World Cup are catered for.

“Money has been set aside for this financial year to help with preparations for the 2010 world cup to ensure that the province leaves a legacy to many soccer loving people,” said Mahlangu.

He added that in mobilizing support in communities for countries that will be participating in that soccer jamboree, three public viewing sites will be established in different municipalities.

These sites will be used to establish a fan base to be supported by fan clubs that will be commissioned and established in partnership with the district Municipalities.

The MEC has also emphasized the significance of the private sector’s involvement in assisting with programs that expose people of the province to various big sporting events leading to the soccer world cup.

He added that his department has been lobbying for big sporting events, such as the Under 20 COSAFA Games later this year.

“We are working together with other stakeholders to bring sporting extravaganza in the province,” declared Mahlangu.
