Image Since December 2003, Thembalethu has held eight Operation Adventure Weeks where over 1000 youth have enjoyed learning life-skills through a fun filled program. These weeks, modeled after the very popular American summer camps, aim to provide a positive foundation in all aspects of the lives of the orphans and vulnerable children who attend.

120 children are selected by Thembalethu care-workers from 10 villages and range in age from 10-18 years. The children are then split into 10 teams which compete against one another in a wide range of activities. Each team is challenged to develop a team song which becomes the rallying cry for the team during the week. This encourages team spirit and enthusiastic group participation which provides the children with a sense of belonging. Many friendships are made and continue long after the week has ended.

During the week, Youth in Action (YiA) lead the children in various activities targeting the physical, spiritual and emotional dimensions of life. YiA provide the children with lessons in food management including nutrition, cooking, food sharing and methods to ensure that food can last for a long time. Some of the children live without adults and during cooking lessons they are taught how to cook a meal for their siblings along with safety tips for cooking.

Food security is a major concern of many who attend and emphasis is placed on teaching home food- gardening. In the gardening activity, the garden coordinators, Rose and Judith, provide instruction on how to plant and maintain a garden. Further, they identify those orphans who lack gardens and help them to start and maintain a garden at their home.

Popular activities see the teams learn and compete in various sports such as basketball, volleyball, chess, table-tennis. Latin American and ballroom dancing along with drama, music and art are also thoroughly enjoyed. HIV education and general life skills with advice on the importance of education are taught and rounded off with lots of singing and dancing.

Bryanston Bible Chapel, (BBC), from Johannesburg, support the program and send volunteers to help with the activities.

So basically the adventure week is a confidence building, learning experience and time of fun and acceptance for the children.
