She sang uJes’ Uyalalela and the whole of KaMaqhekeza Stadium came alive with excitement. Even the Nkomazi municipality’s manager, Sabelo Shabangu, couldn’t resist the temptation to tap his feet. Her first album, Dwala Lami, sold beyond her expectations. She made triple platinum, taking her Amanxusa stable to another height. Hlengiwe Mhlaba, a Durban-born, rose to stardom when she came to Johannesburg as a backing vocalist for Sipho Makhabane’s song, Indonga, in 2004. “She used that little opportunity to shine,” said Sipho Makhabane, the Amanxusa Music boss.
In her three years in the ever populated gospel industry, with three albums under her belt, Dwala Lami, the audience’s darling, UJesu Uyalalela, and Blessing, which was released in the middle of June this year- and has already sold more than 25 000 units- Mhlaba is here to dazzle the world. To date she has performed in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Malawi and many other African countries. “She gets her sound from Heaven and she sings for the Angels,” said those who have listened to her heavenly voice. lengiwe is committed to giving the gospel music lovers her very best. She insists on quality and originality. This, she displayed by turning down requests from several musicians from other genres wanting to remix her songs. Her main reason was that it would make sense if she was just an ordinary entertainer but now that she is a preacher it would be inappropriate. “She feels so responsible for many thirsty souls out there,” Makhabane enthused. |
